HISTORY

The first MAMAKABO Festival went off in August, 2004 in Volzhsk and became one of the most interesting and bright events in a musical life of Russia. The MAMAKABO Festival in 2004 was so much appreciated by both the performers and the listeners that the idea of "travel festivals" – concerts of MAMAKABO musicians in your city – appeared in order that inhabitants of Russian regions could enjoy the creativity of skilled modern musicians and performers, who weren’t replicated and supported by powerful resources of show business.

The first travel festival was held in Samara in December 2004. Along with the headliners of the first MAMAKABO Festival in Volzhsk, the local bands were also involved. Besides the live performances of the artists in the festival program, there were some master-classes of the leading guitarists of Russia. It was a real success and MAMAKABO festival visited Samara again in November 2006.

That great success in Samara was followed by two great travel festivals in Vologda (April 2005 and April 2006), club festivals with the headliners of MAMAKABO in Saint-Petersburg (May and October 2006),a great concert of MAMAKABO musicians in Tolyatti (August 2006), travel festivals in Tomsk (October 2006 and October 2007).

The second international MAMAKABO Festival was the big four-day open-air festival and it took place in Volzhsk again in August 2005. If the first festival in Volzhsk was mainly the festival of Andrey Baranov’s friends – the second one , involving the leading and most talented musicians, became a real holiday for the audience and an important cultural event in Russia.

Significant events in MAMAKABO festival history were three big-scale open-air festivals (2006-2008) held in Koktebel (Crimea, Ukraine). It was a great mix of musical, poetic, theatre and cinema programs, that the audience really enjoyed. The skill of world-level musicians went together with the wonderful nature of Crimea creating fantastic atmosphere.

In 2008 Tommy Emmanuel C.G.P. participated in Koktebel festival as a headliner and later in November the same year he was the special guest of MAMAKABO festival in Moscow, which took place in “MIR” concert hall. Two evenings with great live performances of such artists as Aleksey Archipovsky, Sergey Manukyan, Irina Surina, Timur Vedernikov, Enver Izmailov, Dmitry Maloletov and many others conquered the hearts and souls of Moscow audience completely.

2009 became another important step in MAMAKABO history. First, in September a new wide-scale open-air was held Ethnomir (Kaluga region) not far from Moscow, and then in October an ever-active festival team landed in Hurgada, Egypt, with a special mission under the motto “Extend your Summer”, once again confirming the title of an international event.
