MAMAKABO MUSIC FESTIVAL

ÌÀÌÀÊÀBÎ is the unique Festival of positive and live modern music which is born at the turn of various genres from folklore to rock-n-blues, from jazz to world music, taking the best from each style.

It is the Festival of independent professional musicians who have reached the highest skills and become known not because money involved but because they have put a lot of work and time into the realization of their talent.

The aim of the Festival is attracting general public’s attention to creative work of Russian musicians belonging to world highest level as well as making Russian audience aquatinted with the most prominent foreign musicians.

MAMAKABO is a territory of pure music, free from banality and vulgarity, slapdash work on a stage, from "modern alternative music" which often means indistinct and, as a rule, aggressive musical experiments, where a basis is not music, but epatage.

We are protected by the state laws on ecology. It is possible to call infringers to account if the factory pipe smokes or there was pollution in the river. But unfortunately, there are no laws protecting us from garbage in music and arts. MAMAKABO is the territory free from aggression and violence.

MAMAKABO is a new cultural and educational movement expanding the Russians' knowledge about the modern music events and being in opposition to domination of platitude and lack of professionalism in the modern show business.

MAMAKABO Festival develops Russian musical traditions of spirituality, highest professionalism and skills.

The purpose of the MAMAKABO Festival is bridging friendly, professional and cultural contacts of musicians from different regions of Russia and abroad and creating new musical and information space.

MAMAKABO reduces the gap between saturation of cultural life in the Russian capital and its lack in the regions; it also gets away with generation gap- for Mamakabo is a real holiday for the whole family where everyone can find music to his or her taste.

PREHISTORY

MAMAKABO Festival is a holiday of music and poetry, created by well- known musicians in memory of their friend Andrei Baranov, who was a musician and composer. His tragic death (Andrei perished in a car accident on August 2, 2003) acted as a trigger to unite wide variety of musicians in a unique musical and social movement, the Festival becoming the manifestation of it.

ÌÀÌÀÊÀBÎ FESTIVAL IN YOUR CITY

The first MAMAKABO Festival went off in August, 2004 in Volzhsk and became one of the most interesting and bright events in Russia’s musical life It was so much appreciated by both the performers and the listeners that the idea of "travel festivals" – concerts of MAMAKABO musicians in your city – appeared in order that people in Russian regions could enjoy the creativity of skilled modern musicians and performers, who weren’t replicated and supported by powerful resources of show business.

MAMAKABO Festivals exercised great success in Samara and Vologda, Tomsk, Syzran, Saint-Petersburg and Moscow; three big-scale open-air fests were held in Koktebel (Ukraine).
2009 became an important step in MAMAKABO history. First, in September a new wide-scale open-air was held Ethnomir (Kaluga region) not far from Moscow, and then in October an ever-active festival team landed in Hurgada, Egypt, with a special mission under the motto “Extend your Summer”, once again confirming the title of an international event.
2010 has launched another project in Egypt ”MAMAKABO-Nile” and a new one in Ruku (Finland).
Now we are in for big open-airs Mamakabo at “Usadba.Jazz” fest (June, 5-6) and the greatest in its history “MAMAKABO-2010” (August, 26-29) in Ethnomir.

WHAT DOES THE WORD "ÌÀÌÀÊÀBÎ" MEAN?

Andrei Baranov brought it from the legendary island of Providencia and used this word as a title for his first and -alas - the only one lifetime album. In a local dialect, it is used as a form of greeting, wishing good luck and pl expressing pleasure from meeting a friend. It implies sincere affection and love which one person wants to share with another.

THE OPPORTUNITIES

MAMAKABO Festival is a real opportunity for musicians to try themselves and find their audience. Very often musicians hear from radio stations’ directors and sound recording companies: "Everything is good, but you aren’t our format" or "I like it, but people will not understand it". You will not hear that at MAMAKABO. If your music is skillful, interesting, spiritually rich, you are "our format", irrespective of any genre!

A lot of people disagree with “brains formatting” imposed by mass media. MAMAKABO Festival grants its audience a real opportunity to find real music .

ÌÀÌÀÊÀBÎ festival is a the great performance for everybody!
